Introduction

Your iTunes Playlists can also contain unwanted duplicate tracks even when your Library is dupe-free. Dupe Away can help you quickly detect and remove these duplicates from your playlists, and it only takes a few clicks!

What you will need

  • Dupe Away
  • A Mac or PC with iTunes installed

Before you begin

If you don't already have Dupe Away installed download it by clicking the button below. For more detailed installation instructions, click here.

To check to see if any of your iTunes Playlists contain duplicates, open Dupe Away, and the scan will begin automatically. If there are any duplicates in your playlists, the stack of paper with music note will light up in the lower left corner. Hover your cursor over the icon to find out how many were found.

To begin cleaning your playlists of duplicates, just click on the icon, and you'll see your playlist titles listed in the left panel, and the tracks for each playlist in the main window. A green light next to a playlist means it doesn't have any duplicates. A red light means it does contain duplicate tracks.

Dupe Away will automatically highlight the first playlist with duplicates for you. Any duplicate tracks will be auto-marked for deletion in the main window, and you'll see them set to DELETE in the Action column. If for some reason you'd like to keep any duplicate tracks, just click on DELETE, and you'll see it change to KEEP. To proceed with deleting the marked tracks, click on Remove # Items from Playlist, and the red light will switch to green for that playlist.

To finish cleaning the rest of your playlists (if any), simply scroll down the left column for other playlists showing the red light and follow the same instructions as above to remove the unwanted duplicates.

If you would prefer to use different criteria for how Dupe Away finds and marks duplicates, you can open Dupe Away Preferences and adjust the list of priorities on the "Keep Which Version" tab. Just drag/drop any of them up or down the priority list, and then Dupe Away will begin a new scan once you click Done.
